The Rand Family Interview: ‘Breathless on Broadway’ and the PH Warrior Who Inspired It All MAY 31, 2016 BY GRACE FRANK IN NEWS, PH NEWS.

Monday night is usually a “dark night” in the theater world — a time of rest and renewal. But this Monday, June 6, is “Breathless on Broadway” night, and musical theater stars will be out in force in New York City, singing to remember a teenager who lost her life to pulmonary hypertension (PH) and to raise money that others similarly ill might have a chance for a brighter future.

“Breathless on Broadway” brings the musical theater world to Sardi’s restaurant, where attendees are treated to intimate performances of current Broadway hits and one-of-a-kind previews of future Broadway shows. All proceeds from the evening, which includes a silent auction, go to benefit phaware global, a nonprofit PH advocacy and education group, and its research efforts.

The benefit is also, importantly, a commemoration of Chloë Rand, a “PH warrior” who lost her life to the disease shortly before her 14th birthday, and who — despite a daily struggle to breathe — looked upon music as communication at its best.

“One of the blessings of our life,” Marie Mascia-Rand, Chloë’s mother and a phaware co-founder, told Pulmonary Hypertension News in an interview, “was that Chloë learned well through music. She understood things through singing to her better than through speaking to her. … My mom was a trained opera singer, so we’re a musical family” whose members took to speaking through song to their eldest child and sister.

“Music was always magical for Chloë,” said Liv Rand, 20, a student at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, earning dual degrees in music and teaching. “It became part of our home, our life.”

American in Paris star Max von Essen will perform at the second annual benefit concert Breathless on Broadway, to raise money in the fight against the disease Pulmonary Hypertension (PH).

Taking place June 6 at Sardi's theatrical restaurant in New York, Breathless on Broadway will also include performances by Giuseppe Bausillo (Cats, Aladdin, Newsies, Billy Elliot), Michael Lanning (Bonnie & Clyde, Civil War), Zachary Sayle (Newsies national tour) and Liv Rand. The benefit evening includes a red carpet, dinner and the show and will be co-hosted by Zach Rand (Les Miserables, Mary Poppins) and TV and radio personality Jeffrey Hayzlett.

The evening will include a performance by the a cappella group Switch. Additional performers will be announced soon.

The benefit will include a silent auction featuring prizes, including dinner for two, tickets to a Broadway show and more.

Event organizers described PH as “a rare, chronic illness of the lungs that affects the functioning of the heart and can lead to right heart failure. PH patients experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue. While there’s currently no cure, there are now 14 FDA-approved therapies available to help patients live better lives. Without treatment, the survival rate is only 2.8 years.”

“Broadway (and Sardi's) are normally dark on Mondays, but not on June 6. That Monday night will be all about raising awareness for an incurable disease, to honor those who live with Pulmonary Hypertension and remember those who have died from the disease,” said Hayzlett. “I am honored to co-host the evening’s festivities with Zach Rand so that others affected by the disease have a chance at a better life.”

Breathless on Broadway will include red carpet arrivals beginning at 5:30 PM, followed by dinner and entertainment at 7 PM. Tickets cost $150. The event is open to the public, but seating is limited. For additional information, visit Breathlessonbroadway.com.
